Caption Text Part 1

What is a caption? 

A caption is a short piece of text that follows visual media and gives additional explanation about them. 

Captions provide information to readers to complete the picture and is required as part of accepted journalistic practice. It provides context, establishes credibility and promotes better engagement. 

A caption answers the question who, what, when, where and why about the picture and includes credit for the photographer.

What is the purpose of caption text?

The purpose of writing a caption is to help the reader understand information that may not be in the text. Caption serves to provide basic information from an object or image. An object or image does have its own meaning but it is not very clear.

What is the function of caption text?

1. Interpret images or videos
2. Sending a message
3. Expressing feelings
4. Business needs

Practice 1:

Read out these two captions (text 1 and text 2) loudly and meaningfully and take a note on your notebook if you find some words that you do not understand. Then consult the dictionary.

Text 1
